As I posted a few days ago, I’ve been considering what “the will of God” is and how we should know and do it.
There’s a link to part I HERE.
Have a read through the comment (fittingly, from Will). Before I looked at what stood out in particular and struck me from a sermon. But more generally, what is the will of God for his people? I think one of the really big things is that which Will picked up in a comment on part I; that God’s will is for us to become more like him.
1 Thessalonians 4:3 starts off; “For this is the will of God, your sanctification…”
The message that follows is particularly oriented towards one’s sexual conduct, but it is clear that this is part of their sanctification. It’s God’s will that we become more holy.
Romans 8:28-30 is HUGE.
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.”
The thing here is that we are called “according to his purpose”, and this purpose involves us being conformed to an image of Jesus. This passage fits in crazily with Romans 15:5;
“May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind and one voice , you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Glorifying God and being renewed to be like Christ are the same thing! God’s will is that we are sanctified in the Spirit to be like Christ, all the while glorifying Him. It’s big.
